A healthy respiratory system is
vital for maintaining good health. The respiratory
system consists of the airways, the lungs, and the respiratory
muscles that mediate the movement of air into and out of the body.
The respiratory system facilitates oxygenation of the blood with a
concomitant removal of carbon dioxide and other metabolic gaseous
wastes from the circulation system. If the respiratory system is not
functioning properly the quality of life begins to diminish.
Genetics, lifestyle and the environment are all factors that can
have an effect on a healthy respiratory system. Asthma is one of
many conditions that are the enemy to the respiratory system. Asthma
is a chronic inflammatory disease of the lungs and airways, which
has a typical microscopic and physiologic pattern. It is estimated
that more than nine (9) million Americans are afflicted with Asthma.
When this condition causes the restriction of the airways and the
lungs to tighten it is referred to as having an Asthma attack.
Sometimes there are advanced warning signs when an attack is about
to occur; however, there are times when an attack can occur without
advanced warning. Although Asthma attacks are not widely publicized,
they are not to be taking lightly because they can have fatal
consequences. There are many things that can cause an Asthma attack,
called “triggers”. A few common triggers are; dust, cats, dogs,
pollen, air pollution, mold, smoke, small particles and plants can
trigger an Asthma attack. In most cases Asthma can be effectively
managed with the proper therapy and medication.
There are two types of medicines used to manage Asthma, controller
and quick relief medicine. The controller medicine is recommended to
be used daily for minimizing Asthma attacks. The quick relief
medicines sometimes called bronchodilators are used in case
of an attack to minimize the severity of the attack. There are many
approved drugs used to manage Asthma, however most come with some
unwanted side effects such as cardiovascular impairment, respiratory
infections, headaches, stomachache, runny nose, coughing,
nosebleeds, itching, hives, constipation, alopecia, and nausea to
name a few.
